In august, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) published the mid-year review for the agricultural sector. Their findings point to a slowdown for the industry, highlighting a 9.5% decline on exports through the first half of 2013. Also, late soybean planting in the USA is expected to compound the industrys slowdown. So, what are the prospects for AGCO (AGCO), CNH Global (CNH), and Deere & Co. (DE) under such conditions?

  • [By Mike the PhD]

Historically the stock prices of Deere (DE) and other agricultural equipment firms and retailers like Case-New Holland (CNH), Titan Machinery (TITN), AGCO (AGCO), Tractor Supply (TSCO), Valmont (VAL), and Lindsay (LNN) have tended to closely track the price of corn. When corn prices go up, farmers tend to make more money, and they spend that money on new equipment from Deere and other firms. This relationship is especially strong for Deere and Corn, but it holds true for all of the stocks above to some extent. (Correlation coefficients between all of the stock prices above and corn are statistically significant to at least the 5% level, see my blog here for more details.)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe] s largest brewer (with about 80% of the market share) and No. 2 in the Argentine market, behind Quilmes, which owns 75% of that market. With investment gurus Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio) and Manning & Napier Advisors buying the company shares this past quarter, I believe this company business model is worth a deeper look.

    Running the Market

As the only brewer in Chile with a nationwide distribution network, United Breweries benefits from significant economies of scale, in addition to its brand power. The company product portfolio not only features the Cristal beer brand, but also includes wine, spirits and company-owned non-alcoholic beverages. In addition to this, the firm benefits from licenses to sell PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) and Heineken beverages, while also importing Anheuser Busch Inbev SA (ADR) (BUD) Budweiser beer to Chile and Argentina. This strong market position has allowed the firm to generate excess returns on invested capital above 20%, making it an attractive investment.

Furthermore, United Breweriesbusiness model is focused on market expansion, and in 2013 the company raised 15% of its market capital (CLP 340 billion) in order to fun acquisitions in Paraguay and Argentina. This latter country has been particularly endorsing the firm growth, boosting 2006 16% market share to 23% in 2012. This raise is probably due to the CLP 27 billion that the brewer spent on capital expenditures in Argentina. Looking forward, the company is set on expanding its core businesses by targeting the non-alcoholic Argentine market, the Chilean snack and dairy industry, as well as expanding into nearby markets of Peru, Uruguay, Colombia or Ecuador. And although the risk of an overpayment for acquisitions remains, I believe the company cost advantage in serving the Southern region of Chile will allow for margins to stay intact.

    Valuation and Risks

Nevertheless, United Breweriesmarket dominance in Chile t

Bill Ackman failed to make an impression during his presentation at the Robin Hood Investors Conference even after vowing to ake the fight to the end of the earth.Shares of Herbalife (NYSE: HLF) erased early market losses and gained 4.69 percent, closing at $71.63.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Herbalife (HLF) has fallen this morning, even as Pershing Square’s William Ackman said he had decreased the amount of Herbalife shares he had sold short and replaced them with long-term put options that will also profit if the stock falls.

    Bloomberg News

The main benefit, according to the Wall Street Journal: a smaller short position makes the company less susceptible to a squeeze. Ackman still believes that Herbalife is destined to plummet. In his letter to investors–via the Journal–he wrote:

“We believe it is only a matter of time before the Company is shut down and prosecuted by regulators,” he wrote, later saying he had not seen “a less attractive risk-reward ratio than a long investment in Herbalife common stock at current levels”

D.A. Davidson’s Timothy Ramey notes that the new position seems “at odds” with Pershing Square’s goals. He writes:

If it truly still believes the go-to-zero thesis, and Mr. Ackman writes in his letter that he does, then it makes no sense to put a time element into this trade. He now needs to be both right on the go-to-zero thesis and right on the timing. On one thing we do agree Pershing Square has significantly reduced the risk of unlimited losses, but has increased the certainty of a total loss of the original $1 billion short position as the puts expire worthless. The counterparty to his trades indeed has a winning hand.

The market, however, clearly hasn’t taken it that way, as Herbalife’s shares have dropped 4% to $70.21. Direct seller Avon Products (AVP) has fallen 1.2% to $20.67, while nutritional-product retailer GNC Holdings (GNC) has declined 1.6% to $53.81.

    Leave the wrapper on
The returns on confectioner Tootsie Roll Industries (NYSE: TR  ) have certainly been sweet for investors over the past year. You have to go back to the summer of 2010 to find sugar prices that were as low as they are now, which has played a good part in helping Tootsie Roll keep that aspect of its costs down. But taking a bigger view of what's going on with Tootsie Roll and comparing that to its current valuation creates a sour taste in my mouth.

  • [By Rich Smith]

At the same time, tiny Tootsie Roll (NYSE: TR  ) may see its sales grow as little as 13% through 2016. Could it be that in the candy industry, bigger is better? Does Hershey lack the scale to compete effectively against mammoth Mondelez?

Top 10 Transportation Stocks For 2014

On Monday, I met with David Demers, the founder and CEO of the world's largest manufacturer of natural gas engine technology, Westport Innovations (WPRT).   I spent the day at the company's headquarters in Vancouver. We talked for over an hour about the "crazy" idea I wrote about a couple weeks ago...   "Most people don't get it," Demers told me. "Natural gas as a transportation fuel is here to stay."   As longtime readers know, we began publishing reports on this idea in early 2011... To recap, America's glut of natural gas has caused prices to collapse to near-historic lows. As a result, it's now significantly cheaper to run heavy-duty trucks on liquefied natural gas – "LNG," for short. The U.S. is now developing the infrastructure required to support a booming natural-gas-fueled vehicle market.

Two months ago, maritime shipping stocks FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE), NewLead Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:NEWL), and DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ:DRYS) were all the rage; traders couldn't get enough of them. The spark for the new strength from DRYS, NEWL, and FREE was a strong - and somewhat surprising - bounce in Baltic Dry Index, which roughly measures the daily charter rate for maritime shipping vessels. It had risen from a low of 698 at the beginning of the year to above 1000 by July to a peak of 2113 in late September. Since these shipping companies had seen a tripling (in less than a year, mind you) of the prices they could charge customers, the rebounding interest in these stocks was certainly understandable. FreeSeas shares more than doubled in value during that time. DryShips nearly did the same. While NewLead Holdings Ltd didn't actually dole out any significant gain, it did draw a lot of new interest during that hot period as a potential "the next one to take off" idea.

In the world of publicly-owned businesses, we try to invest with the same sort of individuals. In our opinion, Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's Chairman and CEO, is one such example of a talented, driven executive. Michael was born on a farm in Ireland, the second oldest of six siblings. Although his beginnings were not remarkable, Michael figured out how to get the best education he could by attending the best schools he could. After attending a Jesuit boarding school as a young boy, he graduated from Trinity College with an accounting degree; began his career working for KPMG, a large public accounting firm; and, soon afterwards, became a financial advisor to Tony Ryan, Ryanair's founder. In 1986, Michael was hired to work for Ryan and initially advised him to close the airline immediately since it was losing so much money! In 1989, when Ryanair (RYAAY) was on the brink of insolvency, Ryan offered Michael the job of Deputy CEO of the airline and in 1994 as its CEO. Michael accepted, on the condition that if he couldn't make it profitable, he would be allowed to shut it down! He also chose to work for a percentage of profits rather than for a salary from the money losing business.

Unfortunately for XTO Energy, there was one small and, unbeknownst to anyone, unresolved matter. You see, LINN had a contract to sell its gas through a unit of Dominion Resources (NYSE: D  ) , which was gathering the gas in its system. Having cratered in value as the effects of "showrooming" decimated sales, Best Buy's (NYSE: BBY  ) stock has staged a remarkable recovery in 2013, already having more than doubled in value. With the passage in the U.S. Senate of the so-called Internet sales tax -- its formal name is the Marketplace Fairness Act -- investors are hoping this trend of greater growth (or at least stock price appreciation) can continue if the playing field is leveled for all retailers.

As is well known at this point, online retailers such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) had their growth potential early on bolstered by their ability to avoid paying sales taxes on purchases made in states where they didn't have a physical presence. Best Buy, Circuit City, Sixth Avenue Electronics -- retailers in general, and not just sellers of electronic consumer goods -- were placed at a competitive disadvantage because the prices consumers paid were elevated relative to those paid at online sellers.

Gabriel Bouys, AFP/Getty ImagesBill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. $650 million is a lot of money -- even for Bill Gates. That's how much his investment firm has invested in what might be considered the best way to play China. It's not a software firm or even a computer hardware firm. It's mining giant Caterpillar (CAT). Gates started building a position in Caterpillar before the financial crisis, but he became a very aggressive buyer once the crisis hit and shares had fallen by half. Yet remarkably, Gates has kept on buying, even as shares steadily rebounded to previous peaks. But now that Caterpillar has come under pressure on concerns that China is slowing, is Gates locking in profits? No, he's been buying more, picking up another 500,000 shares in this year's second quarter. At current prices, his firm's stake of 10.76 million shares is worth a cool $650 million. The key question: Why does Gates continue to buy shares even after China's slowdown has signaled the potential end of a global commodities boom? After all, much of Caterpillar's growth in recent years has come from a strong surge in mining activity that uses the company's massive excavators. The simple answer is that Gates and his team of investment managers always focus on long-term winners and never buy or sell shares based on short-term economic shifts. We've seen him do it many times before. For example, even as Wall Street analysts focused on the near-term prospects for auto retailer AutoNation (AN), Gates saw an epic rebound coming, as I noted in this article. Shares of AutoNation have now risen 400 percent since early 2009. Caterpillar: The Long View
